How Smart Lists Work in Marketo

Contents

Smart Lists in Marketo are a powerful tool that allows you to dynamically segment your leads and contacts based on specific criteria or filters. They work by continuously evaluating your database and updating the list membership in real-time as leads and contacts meet or no longer meet the defined criteria.

How Smart Lists Work

Smart Lists in Marketo operate based on the following principles:

  1. Criteria Definition: You define the criteria or filters that determine which leads or contacts should be included in the Smart List. These criteria can be based on various attributes such as demographic information, behavior, lead status, and more.

  2. Continuous Evaluation: Marketo continuously evaluates your entire database against the defined criteria for the Smart List. As leads or contacts meet or no longer meet the criteria, they are automatically added or removed from the Smart List.

  3. Real-Time Updates: Smart Lists are updated in real-time as changes occur in your database. This means that the list membership is always up-to-date, reflecting the most current state of your leads and contacts.

Creating a Smart List

To create a Smart List in Marketo, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Smart Lists: In the Marketo interface, go to the “Database” section and click on “Smart Lists.”

  2. Create a New Smart List: Click on the “New Smart List” button to start the creation process.

  3. Define the Criteria: In the Smart List builder, you can define the criteria for the list by selecting various filters and conditions. These can include fields like lead or contact information, activities, program status, and more.

  4. Preview and Save: Once you have defined the criteria, you can preview the list to see which leads or contacts will be included. If everything looks correct, save the Smart List.

Using Smart Lists

Smart Lists in Marketo can be used for various purposes, including:

  • Segmentation: Use Smart Lists to segment your database based on specific criteria, allowing you to target your marketing efforts more effectively.

  • Lead Nurturing: Create Smart Lists to identify leads that meet certain criteria and enroll them in nurturing campaigns or programs.

  • Reporting and Analysis: Analyze the characteristics and behavior of specific segments of your database by creating Smart Lists and running reports on them.

  • Automation: Use Smart Lists as triggers or filters in your marketing automation workflows, enabling you to automate various processes based on specific criteria.

Smart Lists are a powerful feature in Marketo that enables you to segment and target your audience more effectively, automate processes, and gain valuable insights into your database. By leveraging Smart Lists, you can optimize your marketing efforts and deliver more personalized and relevant experiences to your leads and customers.
